Leathered Granite vs Polished Granite

Granite has taken over the market with its high popularity as the chosen material for countertops in the kitchen. This is due to granite’s characteristics which include resistance to chipping and heat, which ensures cooking can be done more efficiently. This stone is among the hardest materials, making it perfect for slicing and dicing. Granite can also be used on flooring, bathtubs, art installations, and backsplashes as well. There are two popular finishes for the stone: leathered and polished.

About Leathered Granite

The process of finishing granite is a lengthy one requiring many polishing pads, but when working on leathered granite, stonemasons stop when the slab appears matte. By doing so, the appearance of the granite slab is left with a more natural appearance, making it a better option for a more classic or rustic interior design. Of course, this slab will still need to be sealed after the finishing process and may add a satin look, but not so far as to say shiny. The sealing process is merely to ensure control of the porousness of natural granite so moisture does not stain the material. Leathered granite is the best option if you want your room to feel warm and at home.

About Polished Granite

Polished granite has a more rigorous polishing process to go through since stonemasons have to use coarse, fine-tuned polishing pads to create a smooth shining surface. Elegance is best achieved using polished granite because it has a shiny appearance. People can use lighting to their benefit when using polished granite because different lighting will bounce off the shine in a unique way. This option is more popular in kitchens because it adds ease of use for cooking and cleaning. It makes it easier to wipe up spills and messes because the porousness is completely gone from the slab. When it comes to interior design, polished granite is chosen for more luxurious and modern concepts in the home. Specifically, it is most popular for kitchen counters and tabletops.
